Top Tips for Buying an Office Chair

Working in an office means sitting for long periods in an office chair. Sitting in this position creates pressure on the spine and in a bad chair it may cause back strain, leg problems and carpal tunnel. Therefore it is important to choose the right office chair. A supportive chair can increase an employee’s productivity and efficiency.
When choosing the right office chair you must consider its ergonomics before its design. The main features you should look for are:

1. Lumbar Support
The lumbar part of your spine is the part of your lower back that curves at the bottom towards the abdomen. It is important that you choose a chair that offers sufficient lumbar support. It must be height adjustable to accommodate different size people and must offer different depths.

2. Armrests
A good ergonomic chair will have Armrests that are adjustable and not fixed. Their function is to take some of the pressure and strain from your back and neck. Armrests should allow you to comfortably reach the keyboard and the mouse keeping your arms at a 90 degree angle.

3. Adjustable Height
All office chairs should be fully height adjustable and should easily move up and down to allow you to sit in a comfortable position with your feet flat on the floor.

4. Adjustable Back Angle
A chair with an adjustable back angle will help the chair fit your body type. When you recline your chair it takes the weight of your upper body and relieves some of the strain on your lower back. A good ergonomic chair will allow you to lock your seat to your most comfortable reclined position.

5. Seat and Padding
Make sure that the seat is about an inch wider than your hips and is positioned just behind your knees. A seat slider will allow you to adjust the chair to the correct depth for you. The seat should be adequately padded to enable you to sit comfortably for at least an hour. Poor quality foam breaks down too quickly and will make your chair uncomfortable.

6. Material
Breathable fabrics are more desirable to a harder material. Leather may look the part but it is not breathable, it is bad for spills and can crack. Fabric is much more comfortable, gives you plenty of colourful options and usually covers comfortable foam padding.

7. Wheel Base
The base should have a minimum of 5 spokes to prevent tipping over when reclining your chair. Quality casters will allow easy movement over various floors.
